I have seen this one before. In my experience it has always been caused by specifying the wrong mouse type in the /etc/XF86Config file. Make sure that it is the only mouse connected to your system. You can then use gui tools to configure the mouse. Under SuSE it should be a module in Yast2. If it doesn't auto-detect your mouse properly then just specify the value manually. Make sure you apply the changes and then restart your X server. This can be done without the use of the mouse by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, or assuming that you are in runlevel 5 hit Ctrl.-Alt-F1, log in as root and type init 3 and then init 5. You might want to play around with different mouse settings until you find one that works.
