Thanks Jesse, It looks like it was a problem with the packaging itself, as the driver referenced in XFree86 was called "nv", though the Nvidia driver had been updated by YOU.
Upon changing it to "nvidia" I was able to get back into X just fine...and with pretty new fonts and hardware cursor, etc. to boot ;-) Thanks again!
