I like RedHat on the server myself, but all of the major distros. will work well as a server. Just stay away from systems that are geared solely to the desktop market like Lindows (but that goes without saying). > 2) Desktop and general productivity I think Mandrake is great. It gives you lots of software selection out of the box, easy to configure guis, etc. > 3) Specialized multimedia functions (video, audio, MIDI, etc.) I guess it would depend on how specialized you want it. I know there are a number of distros. out there geared solely towards specific multimedia purposes. For example Freevo can be setup as a PVR, and there is a version of RedHat geared towards sound editing. If you are looking to do high end video editing, I know lots of the Hollywood shops are using RedHat, so you might need it for certain high end commercials apps. Other than that seeing as more software will work on any distro, it is probably a better idea to ask for recomendations of software to use for your specific task. The things I would keep in mind is that RedHat 8.0 doesn't come with mp3 support out of the box, and if your looking to play propriatary formats like DivX, and Quicktime, many of the plugins needed don't come with mplay or xine, but binaries are available for the big systems like RedHat, Mandrake, and SuSE > > In all things, centralized administration, ease-of-use, and maintainability > are some of the chief concerns. RedHat has some good features like KickStart, and you can install apt-get or RedCarpet for centralized installs. Mandrake has urpmi, and I personally thinks it works great (I wouldn't say better than apt, but great none the less), and you can also get RedCarpet for Mandrake. > I'd love to hear from the list on this matter for the diversity of opinions > and experiences. It is just a matter of opinion. If you stick with the name brands, you won't go wrong. Jesse -- Jesse Kline <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
