Hi Curtis, Exciting news for you indeed! :)
My recommendations would be as follows: 1) debian or slack for their simplicity and proven reliability--I'd even choose SuSE's enterprise level servers over other "corporate" server distros 2) without a question, SuSE 8.1 on the desktop. You might be especially interested in checking out http://www.suse.com/us/private/products/suse_linux/office_desktop/index.html for their "Linux Office Desktop"--especially of note would be their "auto YaST" functionality which seems to act much like RIS (unattended install) 3) I don't have too much experience with the multimedia aspects of linux; apart from trying to play DiVX media on the desktop ;) As an aside, I've been using rdesktop quite successfully to admin and connect to my win2k/NT-TS farm--hell it even connects to the few XP clients we have here to boot! I've found M$ RIS solution to be buggy as hell myself, so I too am looking for a replacement. Please keep us all advised as you encounter successes as well as frustrations in this process ;) Regards, Chris -----Original Message----- From: Curtis Sloan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 18, 2003 4:38 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: (clug-talk) (admin) Linux distro-to-function recommendations? - was Linux deployment methodologies Alright, here's one for y'all: What distribution(s) would you recommend for: 1) Dedicated, single-purpose server(s) 2) Desktop and general productivity 3) Specialized multimedia functions (video, audio, MIDI, etc.) In all things, centralized administration, ease-of-use, and maintainability are some of the chief concerns. I'd love to hear from the list on this matter for the diversity of opinions and experiences. Curtis.
