I'm running SuSE 8.1 here and I had the same problems that you encountered and had to apply the same 'fix'. - From googling, it would seem that this was/is a hugely common problem encountered by users with multiple (i.e. more than 1) cd-device. In my case, I have a DVD-ROM drive and CD-RW as secondary--both IDE. So it would seem that we are far from alone in this problem. It wasn't even a matter of "fiddling" around with anything, as it just didn't work properly after install, but I could mount the units fine from CLI. Ah well...work to be done I guess, but it seems that Mandrake and even RH have this problem licked already.
