That explains things. I don't recall having to setup a boot partition in the manual. That is an error on my part. I recall that RH and Mandrake don't use a /boot partition which was the reason for my actions. I haven't got any errors with the grub commands root and setup and with a reboot I only got the message: GRUB hard disk error
Mandrake may not but RedHat uses a /boot partition.
