Just caught up to this thread. I also had problems connecting to MSN the last week of September and a few days ago.
In both cases I upgraded to the latest version of amsn. The versions jumped form 0.81, 0.82, to 0.83 in just 3 weeks. You'll find that amsn is not distro specific, works great, and is easy to update.
