The 'best' distro is simply a matter of opinion, and sometimes brand loyalty. 
As for the most popular, among newbies its definately between RH [now Fedora] 
and Mandrake simply because they are the easiest to install/run.

However, once people get accustomed to linux they often decide they want more 
from thier computer [probably one reason to switch from windows in the first 
place] and opt away from binary distros. Typically a lot of people try 
Debian. Although Debian has binary packages also.

Of course I know nothing about suse, slack, or 10000 other distros, but suse 
is definately popular.

As for me, I use [and love] Gentoo.
