If you want to get USED to Linux then Mandrake, SUSe, et al. are still
probably great choices (I haven't run them in awhile so I can't speak to
it directly).

IMHO, if you want to LEARN Linux then Slackware, Gentoo, LFS, et al. are
great choices since they practically force you to get into the internals
of the system.  The drawback is that it can be rather time consuming
and/or frustrating figuring things out.  The real benefit is a deep
understanding of how a Linux system works.
