Unfortunately I think that not using Linux at school is something that
we have to live with, unless you want to try to change policy. I wish
that Mount Royal had some Linux machines that I could work on, but they
don't. If I have to use a computer in class then I just have to live
with the fact that I will be working in a Windows environment. Luckily I
can write all my essays on Linux, and I can access the web based lessons
on my Linux box as well. I choose to do this work at home, so I can work
in my prefered environment. I'm not sure why you would want to hang out
at school anyways.
As some of the previous posts have mentioned, you are working in a
public environment, which is different than working on your own machine,
or a machine in your office. In an office environment it is sometimes
easier to start running Linux, because you are the only one that will be
using that machine, but it still may conflict with corporate policy. The
school board does have policies against doing certain things like IRC
chatting and reading pornographic material, etc. The fact is that by
accessing your machine at home you would be bypassing those policies,
even if you think they shouldn't apply to you.
I think it is great that you use Linux and that you want to use it at
school as well, but CLUGs mission is to promote Linux and Open Source
Software (for example in schools). However we are not here to flame your
principal because She won't let you use ssh to access remote machines
from their computers.
