i don't know if i count as being "in the know" but.... ... this report has been soundly rebuffed in various circles. here's my short take on it: o they admit Linux is cheaper than Windows if you are starting from ground 0 o they then say that it's more expensive to move from Windows to Linux than Windows to Windows. well ... DUH! there are obviously going to be more costs involved, even if all your apps cross over seamlessly. o they don't mention that this is a one-time charge and that you start reaping the Linux Rebate from that point forward, which innevitably leads to a lower TCO given a rev cycle or two. o they say you can't get warranty or indemnification like you can from MS. oh, unless you use SUSE or Red Hat. or any other commercial Linux. in other words, you can get warranties and indemnification for Linux. more to the point, "indemnification" is a buzz-word they want to capitalize on (why? it's three leters, begins with S, ends with O). when was the last time you EVER heard of ANYone taking advantage of a MS warranty or indemnification plan? i'll bet you never have. Laura DiDio is a known MS shill who lacks much in the way of practical knowledge but makes up for it in creative writing and ethical freedom. the Yankee Group is a MS shop. you do the math. - -- Aaron J.
