Some BIOS's have settings that disable to trackpad when you have an external mouse plugged in. However if this is the case, then I'm not sure why it works in Knoppix. I'd check your bios anyways. If you find out anything mare let me know because the trackpad on my laptop doesn't work either, but I have never spent the time to figure out why.
