Are you sure the touchpad was detected and the drivers loaded?  This would need to be 
the case before X started up, otherwise it would never work (or so I would assume).

Also, are you sure you're using the right config file?  I know that with X there are 
two possible config files now - the XF86Config, and the XF86Config-4.  The correct one 
depends on your distro/config settings.

You would think that should be the case. However...

Last week I tried to get both my touchpad and USB mouse working in Mandrake 
9.2. They work fine in Knoppix-STD and so I thought I would copy and paste 
the Knoppix XF86Config-4 file over my Mandrake XF86Config-4 file. X started 
fine, but still no touchpad. There must be some other config files in the mix 
somewhere.
