This means that you were able to connect to the mail server, so we can now not worry about firewalls/routers etc.
From the telnet prompt we can try sending a message to yourself.
telnet smtp.telusplanet.net 25 then type: mail from:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (or whatever your email address is) rcpt to:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (or whatever your email address is) data testing .
The message should be sent after hitting the enter key with a . on a line by itself.
If there are any errors paste them in a reply.
One thing to check is that you spelled the server correctly, I am always mispelling things smtp as smpt.
Also, what is the error you get when sending messages?
Cheers,
Gustin

Nope you should use telnet as Mark has explained... basically you are trying to establish a connection to Telus' mail server. Telling it port 25 is telling the mail server that you are trying to connect to the SMTP service. If you can successfully connect then you know that your machine can talk to the mail server and your problem lies elsewhere. This is a good first step, you can configure Kmail till you are blue in the face but if you have firewall software or something preventing your machine from getting to their mail server it will not work even if the settings are correct.

Hello Jarod,
I successfully did the following:
telnet smtp.telusplanet.net 25
and got:
Trying 199.185.220.249...
Connected to smtp.telusplanet.net
220 priv-edtnes 51.telusplanet.net
ESUTP server (IntermailVM.6.01.04 201-2131-118-1104-20050224) Ready Mon, 2 May
2005 12:42:48 -600
Connection closed by foreign host.
I presume the connection was closed due to too long an inactivity, because I
tried it again and typed some text which was not a telnet command and had a
really tough time hanging up. I eventually did hang up by trying variations on
the escape character until I found one that worked.
Does that provide any clues as to what is happening?
Thank you again Jarrod and Mark.
Regards,
Michael Walters
