With the Athlon64s, you can run in 32 bit mode. In fact, they're a 
pretty decent 32 bit CPU. I've currently got mine running a 32 bit 
Slackware install and it works wonderfully.

Running with a 64 bit kernel, if your distro is set up right, you can 
run 32 bit and 64 bit apps at the same time.
