I'm no kernel expert...

One thing you could try is:
- grab the config file from the gentoo kernel on the live-cd
- then do a make oldconfig with your new kernel sources and the config
you just grabbed
- add any changes you need (if any)
- compile your new kernel

This will give you a kernel that supports a lot of things by default.
It really isn't the gentoo-ricer-way [1], but it has got me out of a
bind on several occasions.
