At the risk of being a "me-tooer", I have recently experienced the same problems with Shaw's DNS for the second time this year. I realize that my setup is far less complicated than the one in question, but kicking Shaw's DNS out of my life by virtue of switching to OpenDNS has made my life a lot easier in this regard.
