So I recompiled my 2.6.17 kernel using the 2.6.16 .config file and running make oldconfig and accepting the defaults for all new options. This 2.6.17 kernel still does not work. I've posted on the Gentoo forums as I don't know where next to look (besides posting to the kernel mailing list).
