Ont the whole, I have been disappointed with most of the packages I have used. Despite a number of valiant attempts, there is no real competitor IMO in the FLOSS world to MS Exchange. It is a case of Exchange sucking less (except for the horrible Small Business Server, which does a lot of things poorly). There are some 3rd party packages that straddle the line (eg. Scalix is not really an open source project), but most add complexity which can quickly cost a lot of money. The first thing they need to do is come up with requirements, then go shopping. Most of the solutions are overkill. Internally my company is currently using citadel, but this may not be enough for your client. As for my client, I am reasonably certain they will go with Exchange.
