This is the KDM or GDM login manager.  Grub was finished a long while ago.

You may wish to check out /var/log/kdm.log or gdm.log, I am not sure
what you are running.

You will also likely want to have a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

There is mail for the local user, likely notifying you of a problem.  it
is probably a good idea to install a console mail client such as pine or
elm (there are others, these are just the two I have used).

Check the logs.  This is always a good first step.
