Mark, Thanks for your email. I just logged in as user and ran startx. There was a very brief flash of blue then the screen returned to black with a message indicating that the log file used was /var/log/Xorg.0.log and that the config file used was /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Some other lines followed that don't seem to be of much interest. Then the last 2 lines indicated that the kernel had disabled IRQ #201 and that "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc refcount is 2, should be 1' fixing'.
