if .xinitrc existed for the root user, it would be in /root/.xinitrc,
not /.xinitrc.  That isn't too important anyway, since apparently
debian does not use it.  Normally, .xinitrc would be the file that
says what programs are run when X starts up (i.e. it would start up
kde or gnome.)

The lines on the console are just there because you are probably
logged in to the console that messages are being dumped to.  "DROPPED
IN=eth0 OUT=MAC=ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff: " is probably just something that
the computer thinks you are interested in.

Did you log in as your user and run startx yet?  If so, what was the output?
