I don't know about installing from USB, but here is my suggestion:

Clean out your laptop's heatsink fan!

I need to do mine every year or I can't even compile something large
without it overheating and shutting down.

Don't just start prying stuff apart though, find the repair or service
manual for your particular laptop and follow the instructions.

Failing that, check if your BIOS allows you to force the CPU into it's
lowest power state.  It may not be very quick to install after that,
but at least it won't crash.
