I had the opportunity to play with John's yesterday for a bit. I think John is right when he says it depends on what you want.
If you are looking for something to provide basic computer services on the go, this will do it. I personally think this is a MUCH better deal than a PDA simply because it is a full computer that can run most any application - including web / email / and the usual PDA type tasks. That said, it's a little larger than a PDA, so this is a judgement thing. For my usual laptop needs, I wouldn't hesitate to use a Eee PC. Something like going to a meeting and needing to take some notes, or even giving a presentation... But I WOULD carry along a USB mouse, and maybe a standard USB keyboard as well. If on the otherhand you want to do some serious work on the go - programming, creating a presentation, or anything time consuming, I would recommend a laptop over the Eee PC - just because the small monitor will be a hinderance. And the need to hook up an external keyboard/mouse for convenience. I want to see how this thing get's hacked up in the next little while, it ought to be interesting. It's running a hacked version of KDE, but the usual KDE tricks still work - like alt-dragging a window when you can't see the title bar. So I'm curious where the limitations are for just what does/doesn't work well on it. It runs OpenOffice fast enough, and that tends to be a bit of a load on most 900 mhz machines. I don't know if it's a modified version of OOo though... Other than the screen size, I'm not really seeing a lot of practical limits yet... Oh and the 4GB drive size...
