There is a binary for Ubuntu listed on the lives download page. That
should be straightforward to install. Did you download and try to
install it?

Again, I don't do this sort of thing with my computer, but in the audio
side I use a couple of different programs, whereas under Windows I only
used one. This is quite common as most programs are made to do a
specific task really well, as opposed to being mediocre or worse at
several tasks.

So for example, under windows I used Cubase for all my audio "work".
Under linux I now use Rosegarden, Ardour, Audacity, and Rezound to name
the most used programs to accomplish the same tasks. It took some
effort to adapt my work flow, but in end I appreciate not being
constrained by arbitrary limitations.

What I am saying is that a single program may not exist to accomplish
your task. You may need to use more than one program to get all the
tasks done.

Not sure what you mean by "its more of a studio type system". At least
in the audio side of things, most of the apps are fully featured. There
are usually no stripped down "home" or basic versions. Why would a
programmer artificially limit or restrict the capabilities of his work
if there is no overt financial pressure to do so?

lives has a binary for Ubuntu. It is also part of two media centric
distros, Dynebolic and 64Studio. I mention this as it *might* make
sense to switch distros.

Formatted with what kind of file system? I only lightly use Gnome (and
when I do, I tend to use konqueror instead of nautilus), but on the rare
days that I use nautilus, there is an icon labelled computer that seems
to have all my storage devices listed (CD/DVD, USB HD, the main HD etc.)
