If by 'seems' you mean 'the drive makes a funny noise', don't trust
that very far for troubleshooting.  Different drives sound differently
when playing CD Audio tracks.

No.  Audio from DVDs comes digitally, often in more than the two
channels the CD Audio cable is hooked up.

Assuming those use cdparanoia, it should be using CDDA... so perhaps
something is up with the drive.  Can you try it under Windows?
