I would suggest LinuxMCE as it handles the install of MythTV
automatically which can be a pain to do manually.

I currently just have a plain vanilla Kubuntu hooked up to my TV (no
mythtv).  All the files are pulled off of a samba server in the
basement.  I use smplayer as my default media player and gxine for
physical DVDs.

I would personally stay away from ATI/AMD (chipsets and video adapters)
as their support is very hit and miss. If you want surround sound make
sure to do your research (ie. check the alsa compatibility page).  The
LinuxMCE project works best with Nvidia anyway.

The microsoft remotes are supported under Linux.  The LinuxMCE distro
supports them out of the box.  Most Hauppauge devices are as well,
though I only have PCI devices so that is all I have tested.
