I may be out of line, but it was my understanding that modems work by
modulating the normal voice or audio frequencies available. (Hence the name
modem) ADSL modems are likely misnamed since no need to modulate any carrier
like audio.
As I say, may be wrong, but I see no logical reason to disbelieve "it would
work"? I assume at the normal modem speed limitations of 53 Kbps for
uncompressed data. I am assuming the are giving you normal or above
phone/audio frequency response.

Many years ago I saw Telus charge a customer $50/mo instead of $20/mo. for
putting a modem on their phone line. But two years later they were not
allowed to get away with that gouge.
