Wouldn't hurt to try.  Just a though that came to mind - fax machine protocol 
is fairly simple, not a lot of hand shaking and long enough pauses between send 
and acknowledgement.  I would think that data transmission would likely get 
messed up with a tight protocol, more handshaking and latency - but that is 
only a guess.

Let me know if you need a pair of modems to try out.

Fax machines work... it's worth trying a modem, or at least asking
Shaw about it.
