Stacee,
Look on the AANAC site for the August update to the RAI manual. Then take a look at
3-153 in the revised pages. It says "do include the IV fluids in IV piggybacks.' when
talking about coding Parenteral/IV in section k5a.

I didn't think that we coded IV meds under IV fluids--only under meds.

The way that I look at it is that when the IV Vanco in 200cc is given,
it is an episode of "total" assistance by the staff. The instructions to
code includes "full staff performance of activity 3 or more times during
part (but not all) of the last 7 days. The manual clearly includes IV
intake and tube feeding as part of eating. So, if the resident received
the IV at least e TIMES not 3 days, then I would code it(G1h a and b) as
3/2 in a resident who was otherwise able to feed himself orally.

Subject: clarifying IV fluids with section G
Hi all
Before I instruct my MDS nurses to code a 3/2 for G1h a/b, I want to
make sure I have this clear in my head. The example given was IV Vanco
with 200cc fluid daily. How many days need the IV be given, 3 or more?
Page 3-81 of the RAI manual just says includes IV fluids, so does the
amount included with the ABT matter or just the fact that it was
present? We have never considered fluids in with medicine as
nourishment. I guess my question is, regardless of amount or reason
why, if receiving IV 'fluids' during the look back period the coding
should be a 3/2 (with a pt. who feeds self food/fluids PO)?
Thank you all so much for your knowledge.
Suzanne
