There is
no easy or fast way to get credentials/certifications in “Medical Records” The
RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) takes two years at a Community. University, College.
A 2-year Degree is earned.
The course is not easy. It is equivalent to earning and LPN degrees. The RHIA (Registered Health Information
Administrator) is a four-year Degree in the health sciences (Equivalent to an
RN). However, there are some Community
College courses that offers courses such as Medical Terminology, A&P, Statistics,
ICD9 coding and Legal Aspects of Medical Records that can be taken at a
Community College that will provide an adequate background to manage a Health
Information Department. Susan RHIA Consultant,

Message----- Speaking
of HIPPA, the two people we have working in our medical records/health
information system have no background at all in medical records. One is a
former STNA and the other was our phone operator. They are in search of
getting some kind of certification in order to continue to operate the
department. Because what they do, especially in thinning
records, ect. effects MDS, I thought it might be appropriate to ask on
this board as to what credentials/certifications do they need to get and does
anyone know the fastest way to do so? We are in Ohio. Thanks. Sherri |
