Okay in what instance would you code a 1/2 rail as a restraint? Can anyone give me a scenario to relate to ?
I would appreciate it.

if the resident is unable to move about freely including getting out of bed and the resident is not prevented from touching and using any body parts then it is not a restraint, if the 1/2 siderail is use to assist the resident in any function then it is not a restraint, if the resident requests it for safety, security what ever its not, also safety measures cannot be used as a reason for restraints its has to be medically necessary i.e. to prevent resident from pulling out invasive tubingsgloria RN MN RAC_C-----Original Message-----We need to set some criteria before anyone answers questions related to restraints.

I never respond because I do not have enough information. I urge other list members to ask for ALL facts before responding.
What is the resident's function
What is the safety issue
Define safety--I have no idea what you mean
can the resident get out of bed
Do the rails enable the resident to do anything--what
And many more?
This restraint determination requires extensive assessment and a decision [answer] cannot be given without all of the information.

Does anyone knows if 1/2 padded siderails for safety is considered a
restraint? Patient has dementia, very restless and has a tendency to hit her
Is the resident able to transfer and do these prevent her from doing so? If she is able and they do, they are.
