Subject: Re: Restraints

I wish AANAC would come up with THE definitive resourse book for this issue!!

I am finding myself in a similar situation-& asking all staff to read the MDS Manual has not been enough. I am unaware of any program/document that answers your questions or raises your important points/problems. I have been putting together a "restraints/enablers/positioner" resourse book that will primarily be for staff, but include admission, ongoing education material for resident & families. I hope to include info from the  "Hospital bed safety work group" working with the FDA, the group "Untie the Elderly" I believe in Louisianna( I might not have the names correct yet),  the U. Penn nurses who published a book in the '80's about restraint free N.H.-still very important today-among others, that all can read.
One of the biggest problems is dispelling the myths & misconceptions, as well as what certain words actually mean. For example, I firmly believe that just because a device is an enabler & used for clear & correct  medical reasons-if it also has the effect of restraining that person-it must be documented as a restraint. It has been very difficult to get all to understand this point-& it is important (with this safety issue), that folks understand-not just do as they are told)
So, if anyone out there has a program/educational material I too would be interested, & be very happy to share what I have.

Restraints....

I am currently working in a SNF in Ohio and wondered if anyone has any ideas for me.

We are trying to come up with some way to notify families we are attempting to be totally restraint free on admit.
Was thinking of some kind of brochure or something to give patients and their families on admit.
Any ideas out there? How could I work it to be effective but not too overpowering.

Any ideas out there for restraint alternatives other than lab buddies, seat belts, hand mitts, ect.

What do you do when the families call the doctor and insist on them and then he phones in orders for them such as full side rails.
We have several of these...when the families of new admits see them, they can't understand why that person has a lap buddy on or full siderails and their family member can't. What do you do with that?

What's the feeling on siderails...we have no where for storage to remove th! em completely?
Are sidrails as enablers OK? What do you do if physician insists on t hem and not used as an enabler...what reason would the order
read?

If restraints are insisted on by the doctor how often do you have family sign a consent for them that they are aware of the risks?
Should the doctor sign the consent also?

Thanks ahead for any help with this
