I had the day I was on the phone with an employee with multiple identities- the FBI and INS officers sitting in my office- as I heard the INS breakdown the door through the phone- arrest the employee and then have an INS officer say to me via the phone "Thanks of keeping him on the line long enough we could get here and nab him"

Best part was he had a CNA certificate of an employee from my previous job had had told us her father was gravely ill and was leaving work early for weeks- then dad died. About 2 weeks later- dad showed up to swap cars with this employee- our sharp staffer called mom at home and expressed his sympathies and then explained we were concerned for her daughters safety as a man was here saying he was her father and we were concerned. Mom and the staffer then discussed the situation- at which point mom said "Tell her father to wait there- I am on my way" and they proceeded to have a family conference in my office at 6PM. I had to take no disciplinary action on that one- her mom and dad it all for me.

Try to explain to the INS and the FBI that the forged CNA certificate belonged to someone else who had worked for me at another facility- I think they thought I belonged on the dementia unit. But further investigation found many CNA's all using the same # on there certificates. We never did found out how much she got paid for these. That was before we did verifications and background checks.

I would love to write a book of all the crazy stories- but it would scare the public even more- we can all laugh as we have been there- some of spouses even understand- but most family members probably do not

These stories are more hysterical of course in retrospect. For all of you hard working and honest nurses out there with real licenses, how about this one ... It was a case of  ... Identity theft !!! I walked into ABC nursing facility to be greeted by the Administrator who ushered me into her office. She then introduced me to Mr. "Ima Gonnagetu" from the FBI drug unit. I was asked some questions about the PREVIOUS DON (the one who was just fired and taken out of the building to work in a different institutional setting) who evidently wasn't even a nurse but knew how to steal psychotropic drugs. That was a fun day.

I laughed so hard when I read your story.....and although I have never been a DON, I have been involved in long term care since 1984, and could also tell you some whopper stories!

The one that stands out in my mind, however, is the time that three residents with Dementia got into a cab that was parked in front of the facility.  I will never forget how difficult it is to track down "three elderly women with gray hair" after they were let off at a train station (at their request, and one of them actually had cab fare to pay the bill).

I think I probably would have handled the "snake episode" just like you did....I would have screamed at it and hoped for the best....see, it did work!!

Lots of luck as you continue in your new position,
