And then there was the day we rescued baby killdeer from the sewer drain, with the poor mother panicked nearby...fortunately, she followed us as we carefully placed the babies back into the foliage next to a "pond" created by rainwater!

I can add a wildlife tail as well.  I was in charge of the facility, one spring day, much like today when suddenly a crash jolted me from behind my desk.  I ran to the hall to see what was happening and saw the unbelievable.  A deer had jumped through a window of our main hallway and was laying stunned and bleeding just a few feet away!!  She then saw me, became panicked and jumped out through the same window.  The police later found her body a few blocks away.  We are not a rural facility.

gosh, and I have only had to catch a wasp or two.  We did have a family member bring in a tame bobcat that climed in my lap (before I heard about the part that it had been de-clawed!)  Never a dull moment...

Okay...

I was looking back over the emails with advice about being an interim DON.

I did NOT find anything mentioning chasing a snake off the premises!!!

Yesterday, I was called by a couple of hysterical staff and family members to come to the sidewalk between the admin office and our dementia unit.  There was a 2 1/2 foot snake in the middle of the sidewalk, heading toward the building. VERY alive.

Did I mention this snake was quite active?

I stood in front of it and tried to look as menacing as possible when one really wants to climb up onto the roof.  I yelled at it, and it turned around and slithered away.

We have 2 maintenance men, a full housekeeping staff.... why did they call me???????

For those of you keeping score, in my tenure as interim DON (which began 3/19) I have had a DHEC visit, a fracture of unknown origin, a missing fentanyl patch from a hospice patient, my staffing coordinator was hospitalized Thursday night with appendicitis, and I had the thrill of chasing a snake.

Gee I can't wait until next week.
