Subject: [CML] Update
Hi Group,
I've been in and out, up and down this
very hectic summer. My mother broke her hip at a family reunion in the
suburbs of Little Rock, Arkansas in June and Andrew and I flew out to be
with her while she underwent surgery and acute rehabilitation. She is home
now in California and doing quite well. I want to especially thank Rob and
his contacts in Little Rock for locating a perfect hotel for us. I
took my 10 year-old son, Andrew, with me on this trip, much to the
delight of his grandmother.
However, while I was gone, my husband,
Mark, had further heart problems. His defibrillator went off and I
received an emergency call on my cell phone from my Episcopal minister who
was in the hospital's emergency room with Mark. Mark is fine now, but it
was extra drama that we did not need.
When I finally got home I had
a bad fall that resulted in a sprained knee and a series of MRIs. Some of
the old-timers know that ten years-ago I had stereotactic brain surgery to
insert a cyst catheter into my mid-brain to drain an (apparent) congenital
arachnoid cyst that had grown quite large. The surgery was rife with
complications, and the catheter is still in my brain. When I fell this
summer I apparently jarred the catheter and I'm still having trouble with
dizziness and balance issues. My neurologist recommended some
vestibular compensation exercises with the hope that they will help me
with this near-constant vertigo.
On the positive side, I had a PB-PCR
performed at UCLA in June that came back PCRU. I asked them how many cells
were tested and they told me that they tested one million cells. So, that
was good news.
I would really love to help plan a West Coast Beach
Blast, but I fear that I'm just not up to that level of activity right
now. I would love to attend a CML get together on the West Coast. So, if
Mary or anyone is up to planning, count me in!
Sending warm
regards, Kristin
