Dear Ann: The bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are necessory for diagnosis. They provide very useful information, such as disease phase, chromosome change,etc.. The procedure will be done under local anesthesia (at Taiwan). However, when the doctor do the maneuver of "aspiration" and "biopsy" , you will felt a kind of soreness. The discomfort will disappear after the procedure. Some of the patients with low tolerance of pain will easily get "hyperventilation syndrome" that is breathing too fast to maintain adequate carbon dioxide in blood. All you have to do is just remain normal rate of breathing during the procedure. When you concentrate on maintaining the respiration rate, you will feel less discomfort. You will have these diagnostic procedure for treatment monitoring every 6-12 months in the follwoing years.
