There are not figures for BMT's 40 years out either which is another factor to consider. The survival rate varies a lot depending on the faciliity where the BMT is done and the condition of the patient.

Hi Roger,

I am 27 and I have been thinking about BMT too.  I thought that earlier since you have been dx is better. Also my organs are fine and so far I am responding to Gleevec perfectly.  I wanted to have a BMT in case that my sister is a match, but unfortunately she is not.  I believe that it was a sign for me to not have it.  I am in a CCR, however I am not sure about PCR yet.  I should receive the results within a week. Right now I think that the best option is to try pills, change a lifestyle, eating habits, drink a lot of water,… and in case Gleevec doesn’t work, try another medications which are on trial (BMS, AMN, vaccination… ) and if there is no another option, you have no choice.  I started to read a lot about BMT and I emailed about it on yahoo. I received some  emails from people who relapsed after having a BMT. Yes, they were older, but still BMT is not a 100 % cure for us.  I do not know any prognosis for young people, if there is anybody who knows what is the survival rate, let us know please!

I am confused too… because if we are staying on the medication we have to believe that they are going to work at least for 40 years for us, right?

Sorry it's been a while since my last post.  I figured i would fill
everybody in.  I went to see a specialist today for the first time,
his name is Dr. David Hurd w/ Wake Forest Baptist Medical center in
Winston-Salem N.C.  I learned a lot today, but most importanatly i
guess is the fact that he wants me to proceed with the BMT.  Reasons
being that my last fish test revealled that i still had 4% philly's,
and after being on gleevec for over a year he wasnt comfortble  with
that result.  He said ultimately it was my decision ofcourse, which
i a m ok with.  Strangely enough i am not scared at all...should i
be?  Dr Hurd says that the cards are in my favor..im 26, healthy and
have a great attitude torwards this.  I dont know what to do though,
he mentioned "super gleevec", but i dont want to put much faith in
something else that is not a confired cure.  I guess inadvertantly i
have already made up my mind to go through with it, but i also have
to consider my wife and my 3 month old. So with that i dunno im at a
turning point fo sure and i welcome any stories on BMT's that you
have to offer, i know that it is a feirce procedure and not always a
happy eneding, but i have to beleive it will be for me.  Give me
guidance please.

thank you

roger
