Sandy,
I fired my first onco doc, but found a great group in Louisville. I have an appointment on the 22nd of this month for a doc here in Cincinnati because I am tired of the two hour one way drive to Louisville. If this doc works out I plan on switching to him. My main concern is the way they communicate to me and Regina. I have found out honestly that I can get allot of info from our group, so as long as the doc does what I ask them to do we will get along just fine. I intend to stay on Gleevec as long as I can since it is working and my side effects our managed by meds. Sure I hate not working, at first it was cool, but after a couple of months it got old very fast.
Man, I cannot believe they told you guys that in the ER, I mean come on, without even knowing exactly what type of Leukemia there was no way they could know that well enough to spew out 3 months. My doc told me before Gleevec my life expectancy would have been 4 to 6 years. Now with Gleevec it is 15 to 20 years. So I hope things remain good for your hubby, and Germaine there are good doc's out there, what I have learned is if they do not seem to listen to you, or at least try and be friendly that is a sign to get rid of them. Hang in there,
Terry

Terry & Germaine, I know what you mean about nurses and Doctors needing people skills. When my husband we Dx last year,His white count was 290,000.The Dr. on call at the ER just came in and said well it looks like leukemia, and I think you probably only have about 3 months to live!!! Point blank,we were in shock.I thought we were going to have to have a sedative for our 23 year old Daughter. I kind of wanted to ring his neck for being so blunt. But thank God he was wrong. Germaine I hope you find a good cancer Dr.It is so important to have a DR. that you can trust with your life.Keep in touch.Sandy

I was at work and she called me with my blood work results. At first the way she was acting I thought I had an STD..hehe(Oh boy my ex would have had some explaining to do if that had been the case..rotfl) Well about a minute into the conversation she pauses and said something to the effect..I am so sorry but your WBC is 100,000 (or something like that) and the tone of her voice made it sound like I was a goner. When I ask her what that meant she just told me my primary doc has made an emergency appointment with a doctor at Louisville Onco and that was all she knew. Mind you I was at work and so I jumped on the net and went to Web MD, and boom, Leukemia came up as a the most likely candidate. I was a mess. Anyway just wanted to let you know I can relate to how some in the the health care field really care about patients but need to know how to talk to people..hehe.Take care,Terry

Thank you everyone for your opinions, I feel much better knowing it
isn't as bad as I was told. The way the nurse told me on the phone it
sounded like my results were horrible. She made it sound like they
don't know what do to next. I am going to write down everyones
questions and take them with me on the 25th. Hopefully they will be
able to tell me what this abnormality is and if it is serious. I am
also looking for a good cancer center that is knowlegable(sp?) in CML.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I live on the Florida and Georgia
border. I am seriously thinking about Fred Hutch, but if there is a
reputable one closer I will try that one.
Again thank you everyone for your input. I appreciate it so much.
Thanks,
Germaine
