Greetings to all and Happy Thanksgiving for those of us in the US!
I've been a member of this group for some time, but I mostly lurk these days.
I do appreciate all of the very knowledgeable people who frequently share their
comments with others.
My husband David was diagnosed with CML in June 2003. He started on 400mg of
Gleevec. We see Dr. Susan O'Brien at MD Anderson twice yearly. A little over
two years ago, she increased his Gleevec dose to 800mg because he had not yet
reached PCR undetectable. At his next test, he was at zero and has been for
all subsequent tests.
Starting about six months ago, David began experiencing horrible rashes on his
face. It looks like Herpes but after three biopsies, that has not proved to be
the cause. While we've been able to keep the rash at bay, we have not been
able to eliminate it entirely. None of the biopsies have given us any
information regarding what is causing this. David has been tested for
allergies and that test was also negative.
Our local dermatologist has consulted with Dr. O'Brien and she has
offered David the option of going off Gleevec for 8 weeks to see if that helps
with the rash. The prospect is both exciting and scary! I know I've read that
some of you have taken "holidays" from Gleevec. Can you share with me the
risks involved? Will David have terrible side-effects when he goes back on the
drug? Will the drug continue to work as well as it is now?
I just want to be confident we make an informed decision about
this. Psychologically speaking, I think this would do David a world of good,
but I don't want to mess up a good thing.
Thanks for any advice you can share.
