One additional thought, most people grip the machines harder than they need to or should. If you're pushing there's no reason to grip. As an example on shoulder presses I open my hands with the bar resting between my thumbs and fingers, an open grip if you will. It has the advantage of helping to isolate the intended muscles. I've been told squeezing the grips also raises your BP although I don't know that for a fact.
