Tracy:

Yes.....there is a "mental confusion" along with some other
psychological problems listed under
the "rare" side effects among the others from the paperwork that comes
from Novartis. I laughed
when I finally stumbled across this.....as it was about a year or so
after I was put on Gleevec
when I received it. I had registered with Novartis on line and they
sent me this in the mail. Anyway,
several of us here had earlier discussed about how we seem to find
ourselves forgetting little stuff or doing things &
not remembering it until much later. I had to have my husband start
checking my work with our
bank statements and check book after a few small mistakes....others
had much larger problems with
where they worked. I found myself putting stuff in places and finding
it later and wondering how
it got there....was blaming my husband (teasingly). So now you see
you are not alone in this.
It's definitely the Gleevec......I found myself not being able to
concentrate unless it is something
very interesting. If it is boring, then my mind begins wandering all
over the place and I, too, thought
"man, am I getting ADD in my fifties") because that is exactly how I
feel sometimes.....especially at church
during the worship hour and trying to stay focused on the message or
maybe watching a movie...I will find
my mind wandering into other places. :). I am an avid reader also.
If the book is a little difficult to read, then
it takes me forever......otherwise I can finish one pretty much in two
days if I have nothing else going on.

I've learned to deal with this by keeping lists so I can stay on track
of what needs to be done or remembered,
and asked my husband to "help" me remember things........and if is
something that I am to do that is very important,
I will simply go ahead and get it done right then. I have tried to
tell everyone in my life that I have this short term
memory problem and need help...so, they might have to remind me about
things more than once or twice.

I admire you for trying to go back to college........it is something I
would have liked to have done ten years ago
when our only child went off to college.....but, I would have had
trouble with passing entrance exams.....would have had
to study for at least a year or so before taking them. Then I would
have been a basket case....LOL! I love studying and
everything to do with learning and school, just don't do well when it
comes to taking exams.......and, I am slow....I have
to really focus and spend time on certain things because it does not
come easy to me. I can't even imagine trying
to go to school now with CML & Gleevec,,,,,,

Keep looking up,
Suzieq
