My husband, George, was first on Gleevec from 2004 when he was diagnosed with CML until his onc stopped at the end of 2005 because of side effects and he knew that Sprycel soon would be available to those who have cancer, called Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CP-CML). The drug was approved in June 2006 and George was put on it. Thankfully during that 6 month period his blood counts remained PCRU. He now has been on Sprycell since June 06. He is now taking 50 mg once a day with the weekends off, that has been gradually reduced from 50 twice daily to 70 once daily, to 50 once daily and now only 5 days per week. His side effect on Sprycel have been much better than they ever were on Gleevec-400mg once daily. Today he has achy joints and occasionally heavy sweats during both the day and night--probably 2-3 times per week. Additionally he has a bad case of arthritis, a bad back from a much earlier accident and has been hospitalized a year ago with a terrible infection after tooth extraction. The change to Sprycell was a lifesaver and he would never go back to Gleevec.
