Jake:

The shoe cost us 3 seconds a mile.

I've told this story before but it's worth telling again. This takes the
"we would'nt modify our boat unless we wanted to make it faster" to the max.

When I bought a Peterson 41 the previous owner had added 1200 lbs. of
internal ballast. PHRF penalized him 3 seconds a mile. I decided to remove
the internal ballast. PHRF penalized me 3 seconds per mile. Hmmmm!

Fred,

I've often thought of a keel shoe, although I draw 6'5" already... Our wind
on the Chesapeake tends to be light most of the time. We do well in light
air. I think adding 600-800 lbs. to my keel would probably slow us down
more than help us. Of course, the PHRF gods would not treat us well for
this type of modification. What reason could a man have to modify his boat,
except to make it go faster??? OK, Wally might modify his to carry more
tequila, but that's just him. What are the rest of us to do?

I would be interested to know what the keel shoe has done for others - pro
and con for performance and stability.
When I bought mine I heard of this and wondered if it would be a good
investment. 3 seasons later I'm happy with the boat and feel no urgency to
add the shoe. BTW we're not in a light wind area. We get just about
everything for conditions on west side of Georgian Bay.

Many owners of the 34 model have added a 500 pound keel shoe because the
boat is on the tender side. If you sail in predominantly light wind area
you will love the boat. Check out the stability diagram and the sailing
calculator on Stu's site under technical info for more information and boat
comparisons.
