That looks like solid rubber O ring material.  If so, it would not compress.

I suggest you try to find out what Wally used, I assume he must have done
his hatches.  Unfortunately he doesn’t have a search function that I can
see.

I have some 3/8” material here that I got for a machine from McMaster Carr,
but can’t find out what their part# is, but if it was ½” I think it would be
what you want.  It is from a company called Mantaline , Engineered Sealing
Systems.  Maybe MCM #  <http://www.mcmaster.com/#8605K44>  8605K44 is what
you want, but I am not sure.
