I used 'Weather Resistant EDPM tube' -- McMaster-Carr part number 4339T6
</#4339T6>. It has held up extremely well, as the foredeck hatch is open
all the time, except when underway, and is constantly exposed to UV and
weather.
I had Hammerhead redo my hatches in early 2008, and they did a good job
but used 1/2" gasket material. It didn't seal well on the foredeck, so I
pulled it off and upsized with 3/4" tube. The tube has a hollow core
which helps it to compress more easily. However, 3/4" was a bit too big.
It seals well, but can be a bear to close. I should have tried the 5/8"
size.
I left the neoprene gasket material on my amidships hatch (right in
front of the mast) and it is starting to crumble, so it'll get replaced
soon.

I suggest you try to find out what Wally used, I assume he must have done
his hatches. Unfortunately he doesn’t have a search function that I can
see.
