Couple things at play here.

1. Your 33-2 is about 5" shy of 33' LOA.
2. Interior volume is not necessarily proportional to LOA.   (Eg:
check out any recent Hunter)

3. You're right about designing to a rule.  The LWL on the 33-2
stretches out a bit once the boat is heeled, and that's obviously a
good thing.

4. Another thing that doesn't get a lot of attention (compared to LWL)
is that overhang provides extra flotation in the arse end when you're
in waves and makes the boat ride more smoothly in a seaway.   (Ie: the
bow can't pop up so high in the waves because the flotation in the
stern is countering it).
