Been there, done that. I tried scraping, painful, slow and I was getting frustrated and that started to take it's toll on my gelcoat. Oven cleaner works like a charm. I had to sand down the gelcoat where the old name was because the UV wore down any gelcoat that wasn't covered by the name so there was a ridge. I sanded that down very, very carefully with 320 and then wet sanded on down. The transom looked good as new by the time we were ready for the new name. I'm painting the boot stripes this spring as well as filling in the holes from the old stern ladder (put a nice new stainless ladder on last year after the rename).
