I used WD-40 as a solvent (It's my universal clean anything sticky or oilly solvent) and my Heat Gun, it peeled right off..
There was a little bit of a ghost image of the old name because of UV fading of the stern section.. After 1 summer it's almost all gone, the stern was actually painted by a PO but the paint is quickly fading itself evenly . As for the 320 paper sanding technique, I am currently in the process of compounding the hull above the water line. (I'm using an electric DA buffer from Harbor Freight and McGuire #49 Marine compound) I'm also wet sanding the scratches using a small DeWalt (Orbital) palm sander starting with 320 wet sand paper and working to 600 - 800 -1000 then compound. The results are outstanding. I removed some fairly deep scratches and the finish looks brand new. The 1000 - 1200 wet sand paper is for automotive uses and readily available at any auto parts store Yes, it's very labor intensive and on a ladder, a bear of a job... -Francois 1990 C&C 34+ "Take Five" Lake Lanier, Georgia
