Martin,
We don’t drink at all while we are sailing.
Yes, we’ve figured out the tides and currents. (Got the Canadian current atlas)
I’m not keen on Roche. (I like Friday Harbor ‘cause you can buy cooked crabs
right on the dock. Bag full of crabs; couple of bottles of red wine; garlic
loaf from Kings Supermarket - great supper!)
I went through cattle pass once in a Benneteau 50 at 12 knots - with the
current.
We’ve been to all these places before. Port Townsend is a really nice little
town. always interesting to visit with Brian Toss and Carol Hasse (Carol Hasse
has cuter employees!)
Talking about the San Juans - my favourite place is Blakley Island. Superb
private dock with fantastic BBQ set up.
We haven’t got a plan B and won’t need one unless the sea and wind is really
bad. We’re going sailing. But there’s always the plan B that says stay another
night and drink some more.

Sam,
> This trip is all about sailing and drinking.
Good thing you list Sailing first on your list, and hopefully your itinerary
takes into account the currents in and around the Juan de Fuca Strait.
For example, leaving Friday Harbor bound for Port Townsend there is a current
“gate” at Cattle Pass and again at Point Wilson (just west of Pt Townsend).
With good timing you can hit an ebb out of Friday Harbor, slack near Smith
Island and a flood past Point Wilson. If that happens there will be more time
for the drinking at the fine establishments of Pt Townsend. If you have not
been there before I recommend using the Point Hudson marina.
Hopefully you have a plan B in case the Straits have her nickers in a twist. A
circuit around the San Juan’s including a night at Roche Harbor (good
restaurant/bar), Spencer Spit (no services, anchor or WA State Park mooring
ball), Deer Harbor (marina, poss. a restaurant), or Anacortes (the big city)
then west to Victoria would avoid getting the whey beat out of you in the
Straits.
One year we took Calypso through Cattle Pass with a roiling ebb (+-4 knots
current) into a 25 to 30 knot TWS south-south easterly. We stuffed Calypso’s
bow into green water several times where the Cattle Pass ebb collided with the
Straits. The rest of the sail past Point Wilson and on up into Admiralty Inlet
was boisterous and fun.

Subject: Stus-List 1st 2014 Sailing Trip
We’re flying out early Monday morning to the west coast - first sailing trip of
2014.
Friend of ours lives on his Catalina 38 in Sidney, Vancouver Island.
We’re going down to the San Juans and Washington State.
Will be in Friday Harbor (note American spelling!) on Monday night; Port
Townsend on Tuesday night; Port Angelese on Wednesday night; Victoria on
Thursday night.
This trip is all about sailing and drinking.
I know it’s a Catalina (with in boom furling)- he does have an aysm., but the
price is right and so is the company.
The wind is usually good across the strait. The best sail I’ve ever had in my
life (50+ years sailing was across the straight from Victoria to Port Angelese
on a C&C 115.
